62 - Flarrrs. That's how I say "flowers". Read it aloud to yourself. Flarrrs.

Shorts - Courtesy of Youreyeslie, Shoes - Jeffrey Campbell, Everything Else - Vintage

I have been lusting over Youreyeslie's shorts selection for months, but could never bring myself to decide on a pair to order. I was in love with way too many. They were kind enough to circumnavigate my strange purchase indecision by sending me this pair of bad boys gratis. And now, we are in love, me and this pair of shorts (as much as a person can be in love with an inanimate object, anyway).

It all sounds like an Ally McBeal episode. I've been watching Ally McBeal reruns lately and it's really quite interesting. I remember being a kid and understanding that feminists hated the show, but it's something different to watch it now, equipped to understand the implication of the title character's odd neuroses. They talk about fashion pretty regularly in the show, too, tying it into gender discrimination. There are a few scenes where women take off their high heels, wave them in a man's face, and yell "The stupid fashion people make us wear these!" and then they chuck them across the room in a fit of anger. By the opposite token, the main characters defend their right to wear miniskirts and validate their lives based on their outfits. I'm at least impressed that they represent both sides of the issue, even if this all would have been more relevant a decade ago. I like it, though, because I feel like my mind is a constant battle between doing what I want, and worrying that what I want isn't good for me as a woman. Do you guys remember this TV show at all? What are your thoughts on it?

  6. Honestly it's always been one of my favorite shows. But like you, I watched it when I was younger so I suppose I wasn't really aware of such implications back then. I still watch my Ally DVDs though, so of course I notice these little "issues" now. In the end, I still love the show, because it cracks me up and nothing beats their random dance numbers. And I kind of love Ally's neurosis. (Wow am I rambling or what.)

So good to see you in a "girlier" outfit Madeline! It's so summery and feminine - but still totally you. (:

  10. First off, you look amazing in this outfit, and I totally get why you are in love with those gorgeous shorts! I totally remember ally mcbeal, and all the talk about it. However I don't think I really understood what the big deal was and I would definitely find it interesting to watch it again now that I'm older and wiser (haha)

  12. Nice shorts... I recently found a pair of floral shorts in a charity shop, but they were handmade badly and the stitching unravelled the first time I wore them. Boo!

  13. Oh my good god, those shorts are amazing. Floral print is probably the best print ever. Also, love your top. I wish I could get away with wearing something that seethrough. I think I'd just weird my finacee's parents out...

I don't recall ever seeing Ally McBeal. It's sounding like a more laid-back version of Sex and the City, though...which I could sit through.

  18. Hellooo- after about five days (!) of no internet or television due to our HELL MOVE between two apts. within walking distance of each other (so it reeaally shouldn't have been that bad), it's nice to see your lovely little face and awesome floral shorts! You look like quite the lady : )

  19. i totally remember that exact episode!!!
i have the same debate in my head all the time. these shorts for example: one side of the argument would be that the company is controlling us by giving them to you so the rest of us will be like, "wow, i need those!"...or something, but the other side would be that you already liked them and chose to wear them....or something. i don't know, this is bad, haha.
anyways, i love your hair! and cute outfit!
