Sweater - Vintage, Shorts - Courtesy of HereJ ($22!), Jewelry - Secondhand + Konstantino + DIY, Boots - Vintage, Hat - Vintage, Socks - Courtesy of Ozone Socks ($26!)
These are the shorts I mentioned in a previous post, which were a gift from HereJ. Aren't they sweet? You can't tell in the photos, but I had total booty hanging out for the world to see, and I am definitely a girl with some jiggle back there (compared to the rest of my body, anyway).
The socks were courtesy of Ozone socks. Ozone socks sent me an email a while back introducing me to their brand and I fell in love. I was with my friend Ceilidh when the email came in on my iPhone. We were at the SPCA shopping for kitties (Ceilidh got a cat that I named Professor CATFACE [all in caps, just like that]) when I pulled up their website on my phone, and I just kept going back and forth between "Squee -- cute animal!" and "Gah -- these socks are so amazing!" It got to the point where I was shoving my phone between Ceilidh and the cats, cramming it right in her face and demanding that she look at all of the socks with me. "Ceilidh, that cat is cool and all, but look at these socks!" Anyway, these are most punk socks they have. I also got these bad boys, and these, too, which I can't wait to wear. I think they are the perfect way to make an easy outfit just a bit more interesting.
Today, instead of me rambling on about my ideas on this, that, and the other thing, I thought we'd try something new. I'm really curious to know what you think. The topic I have in mind today is mainstream fashion co-opting subculture aesthetics. The Balmain punk collection is what got me thinking about this, but there is also the matter of the infamous Marc Jacobs grunge collection (which Kurt and Courtney supposedly burned when Marc gifted them a suite of it), and several other comparable examples of this phenomenon. What are your thoughts on this?
You are such an inspiration always. I love the acid wash shorts...so cute. And the moon&star necklace is perfect! Love it.

Love the rusty red sweater :D
ReplyDeleteLookin' cool there :D
awesome sooocks! So I think that it is inevitable that designers will try to get in on subculture fashion.. It is ok, it just means everyday folks need to keep it fresh.
ReplyDeleteanything that is popularly "un-popular" will soon be popular. it's a cycle. everyone wants to be fresh and unique but no one wants to be different - so they all start doing the same thing, which looks cool so eventually catches on with everyone else and then when Mom's wearing "Jesus is my Homeboy" t-shirts, it's not cool anymore.
ReplyDeleteI've seen this happening now with the vintage/ thrifted tend, with mainstream stores like H&M and F21 coming out with vintage inspired clothes, or t-shirts made to look used. But, it can bring good things, like more thrift stores or consignment shops opening instead of closing and people making more earth friendly clothing choices.
I'm okay with it. Keeps things fresh and challenging, always trying hard to look like everyone else while looking completely unique.
perfect !! I love your sweater !! you rock :D
ReplyDeleteGorgeous look...lovely shots!
ReplyDeletelove the shorts!!! and the name of this post is awesome

I love the contrast of the rusty color with the effect on the shorts! sockkkkkkkkks...so, the topis at hand...are we talking about cultural appropriation? style and ideas are not autonomous, we depend on the world around us to inspire us. It does seem like a lame attempt at making sales though, doesn't it?
ReplyDeleteBadass shorts and sockzzz

ReplyDeleteI think aesthetics, subculture or otherwise have no essential entity of their own. It is the humans wearing it that gives it any meaning. Obviously the matter of taste is different for every individual and we buy what we like--what is a reflection of our taste. Fashion designers, I assume, must design fashions based on the aesthetics that they like.
ReplyDeleteI think the ideals involved in subculture aesthetics are what separates the clothing choices from being simply clothing. Subculture aesthetics have come to have meaning based on its history and intentions of the wearer. Punk ideals of anti-consumerism, anti-capitalism, and other such things lead to their acquisition of what you call fashion, from a thrift store or dumpster, therefore, the holey sweater from a high-end retailer is the exact opposite of a holey sweater acquired from a hand-me-down or thrift store despite their similarities in appearance.
I think there is no problem with high end retailers appropriating the fashions of subcultures, like some have already said, we draw our inspiration from the world around us.
However, I will say this, don't shop at Hot Topic and say you are a punk. Just don't.
:)
Zo Socks! Rock!
ReplyDeleteOh, and of course, the 'you' is general and YOU look amazing as always!
ReplyDeleteI have no idea what it is about this outfit, but it's probably one of my favourites from you. I'm really loving the semi-transparent drapey (no idea if I spelled that correctly) sweater, and I'm feeling like I need a couple in my wardrobe ASAP. I also am really digging the colours.
ReplyDeleteOkay, bear with me here, because I had little sleep last night and worked today, and I'm in the midst of a caffeine crash. Will this stop me from trying to respond to your prompt? Not at all.
So I /think/ what you're asking is for people's opinions on mainstream fashion cashing in on lesser known/'edgier' styles and making them more commercial? (ie. punk, vintage, et cetera.) Whether it's a good thing or not, I think, depends on a lot of variables. Some styles turn out to be trashy or lame (two words: Hot Topic) but even then, some people manage to take pieces of commercialised pieces and make them work. In other cases, some styles gain the right kind of exposure and become long lasting fashion staples. For the most part...I think a lot of styles and great fashion pieces are cheapened when more commercial/mainstream companies sell their own mass-produced versions to make some cash. This is one of the many reasons why I don't hate on hipsters: "I was wearing ______ long before it became popular." It happens to many styles of clothing now, great ones included, and they instantly become over-used/easily tired out, which is extremely disappointing.
I hope that, in my exhausted haze, that I made some semblance of sense! (Or didn't bore the sense out of you.)
I love every piece in this outfit. you always know how throw great things together
ReplyDeleteThe colour pallet of this outfit is amazing !
ReplyDeleteAbout your topic I don't really mind that mainstream co opts sub culture fashion because it only forces people to move on and create new trends which in all honesty I think is a good thing and what makes fashion constantly moving :)
